Dog Sprayed by Skunk
What to do if your dog is sprayed by a skunk.
If your dog gets sprayed by a skunk, you can concoct a homemade remedy to combat that awful smell. Because skunks are nocturnal creatures, this unfortunate scenario usually happens at night when Molly goes outdoors for that last potty run.
Tomato juice used to be the first thing pet owners would grab in such an emergency. Because it’s acidic, it is somewhat effective, but groomers see plenty of pink Poodles, Bichons, and even Samoyeds the day after such an encounter. Owners had liberally applied spaghetti sauce, ketchup, stewed tomatoes, as well as the old standby. A better choice is the following recipe:
- 1 quart 3-percent hydrogen peroxide
- ¼ cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- 1 teaspoon liquid soap (Dawn works best)
Wet your dog thoroughly, then work this formula throughout the coat. Leave it on for five to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. It’s important to discard any leftover mixture. If stored in a closed container, it becomes combustible.
