Thousands of dogs are rescued from shelters each year and transported to new homes by a grassroots network of volunteers known informally as the Rescue Railroad. On any given weekend, volunteers crisscross the country to keep countless dogs from being euthanized. To get involved, call your local shelter for the names of rescue groups that conduct transports.
