During her second winter term of college, Tara Choate of Oregon City, Ore., experienced a painful breakup that plunged her into a clinical depression. “I didn’t want to move; I didn’t want to do anything,” she recalls.
Choate would have given up, except for one thing: Her roommate Sean, a lively 9-month-old Labrador Retriever, needed training and exercise. “He needed more than just a couch,” she says. “I saw an ad in the paper for agility classes and decided to follow up. I can’t say ‘poof!’ it fixed us, but by summer I was outdoors training Sean. I’m lucky. I’ve never again had the same problem with depression. Dogs and agility have kept my life steady.”
