Eco-Friendly Meets Dog-Friendly

Shelters and dog parks across the country go green.
By Debra J. White

Animal shelters are going green, albeit slowly. There are at least seven green shelters with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council operating in the United States and Canada.

Eleven green shelters are under construction in California, Florida, and Michigan. Green shelters are planned in Colorado and New Mexico. The Dearborn, Mich., Animal Shelter and others are raising funds to go green.

No central source collects such data, so there could be even more. Only shelters with LEED certification are tracked by the U.S. Green Building Council.
