Traveling with your dog can bring miles of fun and fond memories — or turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. If you’re itching to take your pooch along for the ride, these 40 travel facts and expert tips will steer you toward a successful trip.

Plan ahead
Not all dogs make good travelers, so carefully consider whether yours should come with you. Bonnie Beaver, D.V.M., of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Texas A&M University, recommends leaving your dog home if he doesn’t travel well (i.e. due to temperament or health issues) or you lack the time to train him to travel properly.
