Taking to the open road is a joy for these women with their dogs along for the ride.
Dogs, especially those who travel to shows and competitions, are no strangers to RVs, hotels, and being on the road. But for a steadily growing group of women and their dogs, the lure of the open road is more about combining freedom, travel, and the simple pleasure of one-on-one companionship with a nomadic lifestyle. For women like Paula J., 48, traveling with her dog is also about healing, growing, and sharing.
Paula, a grandmother of five, is a special-education aide for a middle school in Massachusetts and is passionate about motorcycles. She credits Cooper, her 4-year-old male Bichon Frisé therapy dog with her newfound ability to travel. Paula and Cooper have been motorcycle companions since Cooper was a puppy and Paula placed him on her bike for a short ride in 2006.
