You’ve come a long way, King. In the 1960s and ’70s, police dogs were “unapproachable, pure attack dogs that were basically used as weapons,” remembers Jim Watson, national secretary of the North American Police Work Dog Association in Ohio, and a nationally accredited master trainer of police dogs.

Today, by contrast, police departments understand that the most valuable part of a police dog isn’t his mouth — it’s his nose.
