Manchester Terrier

This spunky breed is a loyal guardian.

One breed, two varieties
The Manchester Terrier comes in Standard and Toy varieties. Size and ear shape distinguish them, but breeders say their differences run more than skin deep. While the Standard tends to embody the sportiness and spunk of a terrier, the Toy takes a more laid-back look at life, says Amanda K., a champion breeder and lifelong Manchester owner in Nova Scotia, Canada.

“Toys tend to be a little softer and easier to live with, due perhaps to [breeding] influences from Italian Greyhounds and Chihuahuas back in the Victorian era,” Amanda says. “Standards are a little bit bigger, so they’re that little bit more confident and braver than Toys are. You can see the difference in how they look at the world.”

I love the Toy Manchester Terrier. It is a wonderful, loving breed, and capable of being trained for obedience, rally, agility and can be a great therapy dog.
