Mini but Mighty

The compact Miniature Australian Shepherd's brains and spirit are more than a match for his larger cousin's.
By Lisa Hanks

"I call my Mini the travel-sized Aussie — she's just right for the smallest of seats and fits on any lap," says Gary Dannenbaum, of California. He says his 11½-year-old Miniature Australian Shepherd Maggie is "cute enough to gain admittance at nearly any hotel or vacation rental."

But don't assume this dog is merely an accessory. Standing 14 to 17 inches tall, the Mini Aussie has fans not only of his size, but of his all-Aussie personality and looks. The Mini is a responsive, whip-smart worker. Although wary of strangers, he's devoted and affectionate to his family.

The Mini Aussie is a Velcro dog. "They're happy doing whatever you're doing, as long as they can do it with you," says Karen Keller, of California, president of the North American Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of the USA. "Don't want a shadow in the bathroom with you? This isn't the breed for you."
