Newfound Friend

The Newfoundland is a gentle giant with an affinity for water.

When Roger Frey jumped off a 30-foot pier, just for fun, his Newfoundland Beau Brummel didn’t approve. The hefty, shaggy, muscular dog sailed after Frey, plunged into the water, paddled toward him using his big webbed paws, and hauled him back to shore. “I guess he didn’t think it was safe,” Frey says.

A gentle giant at heart, the Newfoundland is a talented lifeguard by trade, and most can’t help rescuing family members — especially children — from the inherent dangers of water. Natural nurturers and highly social, Newfoundlands make excellent companions, but because they are a giant breed, they also have specific care needs.
