Taking care of your puppy’s health is job No. 1. You want him to grow into a strong, vital dog, right? He can only do that if you take precautions to keep him safe, use preventives to hold off parasites, and give him quality veterinary care.

Choose a vet
Before you get your pup, research and line up a vet. The most important thing an owner can do is take a new puppy immediately to the veterinarian, says William Fortney, D.V.M., assistant professor of diagnostic medicine at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The vet can look for genetic diseases and birth defects before you become attached.
