The Young and the Restless

Babies no more, adolescent puppies face new changes as they head toward adulthood.
By Maureen Kochan

It’s a scenario familiar to any dog owner: Your adorable, eager-to-please puppy hits the half-year mark, suddenly stops paying attention, starts shedding like crazy, and even mounts or nips at you.

What gives? Most likely, your dog has entered adolescence, a period that typically begins around 6 months of age and lasts six or seven months. And like in humans, this stage can be marked by raging hormones, hair and skin woes, increased risk-taking, and even flashes of defiance.

Assuming you read our July issue when we covered training younger puppies, you’re ready to take on this next phase. If not, we’d highly recommend checking out the article first at DogChannel.com/puppytraining so you’re better equipped to move forward.
