My Day at the UKC Premier

When I drove up to the gate at the United Kennel Club Premier event in Kalamazoo, Mich., I knew June 14 would be no ordinary day at the fairgrounds. As dogs barked and howled all around, I dodged motor homes, shade canopies, and row after row of colorful kennel trailers.
Dogs of every coat type in every color paraded around, gearing up for their moment to shine. Amazed at the sheer variety and numbers of dogs covering the fairgrounds, I had to resist the temptation to crouch, pet, and ogle dozens of friendly, well-trained canines as they passed by. That's no easy task for a dog lover like me.
