"She was really going downhill,” says Janine A., a professional organizer in Missouri, of her beloved 8-year-old Standard Poodle. Scout, whom Janine called a “child-substitute” dog, was dying of kidney cancer.
As Janine and her husband painfully rode out the ups and downs of Scout’s seven-month illness, she hoped that Scout would die peacefully in her sleep. “I kept thinking, ‘Maybe she’ll be gone when I wake up.’” Having to make the decision to put her dog down seemed too much for her.
