Xoloitzcuintli

By Cherie Langlois

Good to Know
“Xolos are great problem solvers,” says Amy Fernandez of Forest Hills, N.Y., president of the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America. “Don’t ever expect that your yard is secure enough to keep one contained. They’re excellent jumpers and diggers, and they can open gates.”

Name That Dog — If You Can
The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eats-queent-lee) gets its unusual name from the Aztec god Xolotl and the Aztec word for dog, itzcuintli. You may be more familiar with its other moniker: Mexican Hairless.
