One of the dog show world’s most high-profile partnerships owes it all to a very naughty puppy named Chipper.

In 1958, a time when crate training and doggie daycare were as unheard of as iPods and TiVo, Navy lieutenant and physical therapist Jean Heath acquired an irresistible salt-and-pepper Miniature Schnauzer puppy.

“Chipper tore up everything,” remembers Heath of the ravaged apartment she returned to after her shifts at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. “The crowning blow was when he not only pulled down the drapes, but the brackets and wall plaster, too.”

Desperate, Heath followed the chain of command until she was sitting in front of the chief of orthopedics. Could she bring Sir Chip of Rainy Brook, as her tornado of a puppy was formally called, to work with her for just a few days?
