The recent - and growing - focus on wellness and nutrition has hit not just the human marketplace, but the pet-product aisles as well. From once-a-day multivitamins to skin-and-coat food additives, the dog supplement market can be confusing. But with some research, common sense, and a commitment to basic healthcare, choosing a dietary supplement for your dog need not be a daunting a task.

Regulated, or not?
Like animal medications, animal health supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine. The FDA is the ultimate regulatory authority over animal feed, food supplements, and drugs. But these products are typically a low regulatory priority, and there are not enough resources to patrol this industry properly, say officials.
