Airedale Terrier
By
Terry Winkelmann
Ever since she was a pup, Betsy, now 4, has vigilantly kept her familys five acres varmint-free. She regularly delivers raccoons to the front porch and chases Canadian geese into the pond.
Owner Janet Framke once watched Betsy, a 55-pound Airedale Terrier, circle four cows into a group, then herd them off the property. Shed never seen a cow before in her life, but she has a natural sense of who belongs and who doesn't, says Framke, who promptly called her neighbor to retrieve his wandering herd.
Although beloved by presidents and authors, the Airedale started out as a farmers dog.
