Delicate Devotion in Italian Greyhounds

Italian Greyhounds have a well-deserved reputation for sticking quite literally to their owners sides.

Lickers, lovers, and pursuers of warmth, Italian Greyhounds have a well-deserved reputation for sticking quite literally to their owners sides and lavishing them with all the affection a Toy breed can muster.

Body Dog
The Italian Greyhounds beautiful soft eyes, pleading expression, and sensitive nature suit him for constant companionship. Not exactly a lap dog those long legs just don't fit Italian Greyhounds instead seek constant physical contact with their people.

Some people might even call them too needy, says Barber, an Italian Greyhound breeder in Murietta, Calif., corresponding secretary for the Italian Greyhound Club of America, and the author of The Italian Greyhound, 21st Century (Italian Greyhound Productions, 2002, $29.95).

Notorious for wheedling their way under the covers and draping themselves over people, the Italian Greyhounds physicality is part of the breeds charm.

I have 2 IG's I have adopted. I did my research before we decided which kind of dog my husband and I wanted. I love this breed. IG's are easy to maintain, short hair and not to much exercise. We adopted the female first, she was 8 months old when we got her and we were her fifth place. She was afraid of everything, people, dogs, noises, you name it. To potty train her was not an easy task but after awhile she got it. She was doing so well with a dog like her (mix terrier and IG) from our neighborhood, so we decided to get her company. We adopted a 2 1/ 2 years old male IG, same color blue and white, they look brother and sister and immediately after we got him she got better and better. We walk them twice a day, they love to be under the covers, where ever I go they go. They are more attached to me than my husband but that is because I do 80% of their stuff. I take the female to obedience classes and the male to agility training. They are fun to have, intelligent, easy going, they love people, not a a lap dog but love to be with me all the time. They are like stickers. I love my IGs.

I have one - he's had seizures since he was close to a year old, I believe. It seems to be when he gets overly excited - like if he's sleeping when we come home & we startle him awake ... Shortly thereafter he'll have one. Other times, it doesn't really seem like anything set it off. I emailed the breeder we bought him from, basically just to let her know just in case any of the owners from the rest of the litter have any questions. Her response was basically a "It's got to be something you're feeding him, or he got into something - because MY dogs have NEVER had any health issues." Needless to say, I wasn't very happy with that response, & haven't emailed her since. Weather he does or doesn't have ANY health issues; be it seizures, cancer, asthma, or ... Whatever ... He's still my baby & I wouldn't trade him for all of the healthy IG's in the world.

They are definitely lap dogs, or at least mine is. He LIVES under a blanket - usually on my lap or between my legs. When I'm sitting, he's on me. When I'm sleeping, he's by me. When I use the restroom, he follows. Etc ... So yea, I guess you could call them "needy" when it comes to the attention they seek. I so know he's a jealous little man too. If my husband tries to sit by me, Toby (our IG) has to stretch out across BOTH of us & be the center of attention. & don't even get me started on his love for his squeaky toys, or beef jerky treats.
Should anything, God forbid, happen to him, I wouldn't hesitate getting another IG. He's the most amazing, soft hearted, loving pet I have ever had the good fortune to be blessed with.
