You never have to tell Rusty what day it is. At night, after socializing with his family for a while, the champion Cairn Terrier hops off the couch, trots down the stairs, and hangs a right into Trevor McIlwaines room. The next night, he hangs a left into Ian McIlwaines room. He takes turns sleeping in each boys room every night, says Peggy Beisel-McIlwaine, a Cairn Terrier breeder and judge in Ann Arbor, Mich. He always knows whose turn it is.

Bright, lively, intelligent, and respectably scruffy, the Cairn Terrier has an independent spirit and an unabashed self-confidence. They love themselves first, and you second, Beisel-McIlwaine says. Cairns know what they want.
