 | | My Dog's Name: | | Nora | | Breed: | | mix | | Together Since: | | May 2009 | | How I met my adopted dog: | | I had my 13 year old lab, Jazz, put to sleep on March 19, 2009. I so missed having a dog for companionship that I soon began browsing around for a new companion. The Potter League in Middletown, RI seemed the logical choice, having been the place I adopted Jazz and two of my cats from in the past.
Well, having four cats and three kids, I knew finding just the right dog might be a challenge. The staff at the Potter League suggested I might be better off adopting a puppy and starting from scratch. I was hesitant to do so, wanting to give an adult dog a home, but I agreed to come look at the puppies that were being transferred from a shelter in North Carolina.
When I arrived on the appointed day, the shelter was packed with people looking at all the puppies. I chose a hallway of runs at random and strolled all the way to the end where I saw a petite black dog standing calmly at the door. She looked at me, I looked at her and she wagged her tail. I asked to see her and the volunteer got a leash and gave me some information. Her name was Nora and she was around 2 years old. She had come up from NC with the puppies as the shelter there thought she had a much better chance of being adopted in this area. From what I gathered, dogs that look like her are a dime a dozen down there and her chances of adoption would have been slim to none.
I took her for a walk around the property and was impressed with how easy to handle she was; no jumping or barking or pulling. I was hooked. I went back inside and said I wanted to adopt her. The only thing left was to have her tested with cats which she passed with flying colors and a few days later she came home with me.
Nora has been a dream come true. From day one she has not uttered a bark or growl at my cats, has not even attempted to play with them. She is gentle and loving with everyone she encounters and has bonded strongly with me.
I'll probably never know what her exact breed makeup is; best guess is lab with some type of terrier. But it doesn't matter to me or my family. Nora is one in a million! She's 37 pounds of pure love! |
