What Kind of Dog Is This?

You might be surprised by the results of our mixed-breed DNA tests.

We chose three of our readers’ mutts to have genetic breed testing done. Then we asked you to guess their breeds. Hundreds of readers gave their best guess, but only a few answered correctly. Find out if you were on the money — or way off mark.

Owner:  Yukari Mannon of Silverdale, Wash.
Significant breed: None
Intermediate breeds: German Shepherd Dog, Lhasa Apso, Pomeranian, Rottweiler
The editors say: Bella has many breeds in her, some we can see a hint of. She looks most like a German Shepherd Dog, particularly her ears — but her impressive tail hints at her Pomeranian ancestry, as does her color. As for Rottweiler and Lhasa Apso, it’s anyone’s guess.

Owner: Carie Siria of Conay, Ark.
Significant breed: Miniature Poodle
Intermediate breed: Papillon
The editors say: Willow’s small but sturdy frame is definitely inherited from the Miniature Poodle, but her coloring, large ears, and arched tail point to the Papillon. Siria says Willow loves playing with her tennis ball — she must have also inherited a Poodle’s love of retrieving.

Owner: Janet Nedved of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Significant breed: None
Intermediate breeds: American Staffordshire Terrier, Chinese Shar-Pei, Labrador Retriever
The editors say: We see definite influences of the American Staffordshire Terrier, particularly in his strong build, coat, color, and ears. The Labrador Retriever and Chinese Shar-Pei ancestry may be expressed in his temperament or other behavioral traits, but not so much in his physical traits.
