Kennel Club: The first meeting to consider forming an Australian National Kennel Council was held in Sydney in 1949. Prior to this the different states regulated their dog show and registration activities independently. The ANKC was not formed until 1958, and then only as a “coordinating and recommendatory” body among the eight regional kennel clubs. It has since gradually moved to take greater control over purebred dog activities in the different states. A new constitution was accepted on Feb. 12, 2011.

Membership: The ANKC Board consists of a president, a vice president, a treasurer, and a company secretary/administrator, plus directors from the eight ANKC member bodies:

Dogs ACT (Australian Capital Territory), 605 members.
Dogs West (Western Australia), 2,224 members.
Dogs Queensland, 6,987 members.
Dogs NT (Northern Territory), 221 members.
Dogs NSW (New South Wales), 10,334 members.
Dogs SA (South Australia), 2,887 members.
Dogs Tasmania, 1,050 members.
Dogs Victoria, 9,152 members.
There are also working parties and committees dealing with legislative issues, breed councils, breed standards, agility, canine health and welfare, obedience, herding, junior handling, judges training, etc.
