Irish Water Spaniel wins Gundog Group; Clumber Spaniel fails vet check
Posted: March 9, 2012
Day two at Crufts was for Gundog judging, the task of which went to John Thirlwell. After eyeing an impressive lineup, his Best in Show selection went to Sh. & Am. Ch. Whistlestop’s Elements of Magic, an Irish Water Spaniel from Carlisle, owned by Judith Carruthers. The Reserve went to Labrador Retriever Sh. & Am./Can. Ch. Salty Dog of Tampa Bay, who came all the way from Florida and is owned by Linda Hess.
The vet disqualifications have also continued on the second day, with a Clumber Spaniel being eliminated from Group competition and denied Best of Breed. Following its check by an independent veterinary surgeon, the Clumber Spaniel was not allowed to continue into the Gundog Best in Group competition.
“The veterinary checks were introduced to ensure that dogs with exaggerated features do not win prizes. The independent veterinary surgeon decided that the Clumber Spaniel should not pass its vet check and therefore it did not receive its Best of Breed award and will not be representing its breed in the remainder of the competition,” says Kennel Club Secretary Caroline Kisko.
