Know Your Rights... and Your Responsibilities
Answers to some common, and some not-so-common, questions about how things work and what the rules are at the dog show. All of these situations are based on real experiences of exhibitors.
•You’re worried: a group of dogs in the grooming tent are coughing, and the handler has ignored your request to move them. Can you have them excused from the show?
Definitely. Bringing sick dogs to a show is not only irresponsible, it is a violation of the AKC rules and a violation of club regulations, which can result in a fine, suspension or both.
•Can you bring your puppies to the show for training and socialization?
Yes, if they are eligible to be shown at AKC events, which means they must be 6 months of age, and provided that the premium list does not state otherwise. But you better not attempt to display them or sell them at the show. (Note that many premium lists include this or a similar notice: “No unentered dogs allowed at these shows.” — Ed.)
