What's So Special About a National Specialty?

Combine education and entertainment by attending your next national.
by Alice Bixler

As glamorous or prestigious as the high-stakes, televised events such as Westminster or the AKC Invitational may seem, national specialties are truly the high points of the year. No matter if you’re a newcomer or a longtime breeder, a prospective judge or an experienced adjudicator, or perhaps just someone wondering if the breed is right for you – a breed’s national specialty is the place to find information and answers, fun and friendship, and the most exciting breed competition of the year.

For some breeds, the national specialty may be only a one-day event – either an independent show or perhaps part of an all-breed competition. Other specialties may stretch over as many as 10 days and keep participants busy with a number of events, such as obedience, agility, seminars, speakers, temperament tests, herding and hunting trials, dinners, and a whole lot more.
