I love the fun and sometimes crazy challenge of trying to wrangle dogs during photo shoots. Lucky me, we had two photo shoots this month. The first was for the Dog World Editors’ Choice awards. My Miniature Poodle, Jäger, was more than happy to pose with a few of the winners. Read more about the winning products on page 24.
The second photo shoot took place at the lovely home of Bloodhound breeder Susan Lacroix-Hamil. We heard the Bloodhounds before we saw them. There’s nothing like being cheerfully (and loudly) greeted by seven boisterous, bounding Bloodhounds. It was my first time interacting with the breed up close. They are stunning to behold. I was starting to see how people are quickly won over by this charming breed.
Of all the breeds I’ve helped photograph over the years, the Bloodhounds were perhaps the most challenging. Our objective was to coerce the dogs to look at the camera, but someone must have forgotten to tell the Bloodhounds. I witnessed firsthand just how difficult it is to win a Bloodhound’s attention once its nose catches a whiff of something enticing. Everything in the yard – the bushes, the grass, the flowers, the dirt, the stairs – was far more interesting than us or the camera. Maybe we should have rubbed it with bacon.
We did capture a number of beautiful images and had fantastic time. Oh, by the way, it’s true what they say about Bloodhounds and drool – it’s a good thing I don’t mind getting slimed!
