Cook’s Corner: Alternative Meats

Some organ meats provide an excellent source of nutrition for your dog.

Meat-based diets for dogs are hands-down favorites among holistic veterinarians, and most holistic vets agree that small amounts of organ and variety meat make a mostly meat diet even more nutritious. There are, however, risks and benefits to keep in mind when adding organ meat to your dog’s meals.

Human perceptions
First, it helps to realize that organ meats come with different cultural customs and perceptions. One variety of meat may be highly esteemed by one group of people, but reviled as unwholesome or even forbidden by another.

Dogs, however, will eat almost anything that entices their sense of smell. So, when it comes to feeding them organs, we can eliminate any of our human emotional considerations and concentrate on whether or not the food is healthy.
