An Impressive Performance
By Jackie Brown |
Athletic good looks? Check. Sweet disposition? Check. Intelligent mind? Check. What’s not to like about the Vizsla? I have long admired the breed, but never had a chance to get to know them more personally until now. Last month, the Dog World team met up with seven Vizslas in Laguna Beach, Calif., for our first beach photo shoot. It was a beautiful day I’ll never forget.
The group of seven boisterous Vizslas got more attention than I’ve seen in a long time. All throughout the day, people approached us asking, “What kind of dogs are those?” Interestingly, fewer people recognized the breed than I would have expected.
Despite all the distractions found at a public beach – particularly the sea gulls just begging to be chased – this group of dogs blew us away with their ultra-proofed obedience skills. The photo on page 34 and 35, featuring all seven dogs, is a testament to these Vizslas’ amazing control and desire to please their owners. All the dogs were told to stay, and they remained frozen in place, eyes trained on their owners as our photographer took shot after shot. When the photographer felt she had captured the perfect picture, she gave the word and one of the Vizsla owners uttered a low and quiet “OK.” Immediately, all seven dogs leapt up in unison and galloped toward us, much to the delight of the small crowd that had gathered to watch.
We raced to take a few last photos before the sun dipped below the horizon and the light gave the Vizslas’ rust-gold coats a brilliant orange glow. As we watched the sun set into the ocean, we agreed that it doesn’t get any better than this.
