Walking the Dog Then and Now
As a kid, I was responsible for walking the family Golden Retriever. I loved Jake, but I didn't love walking him. To me, it was a chore, something I had to do before I could go back to playing with friends, reading or watching TV.
It's funny how your perspective changes when you get older. I love walking my Miniature Poodle, Jager. On hectic mornings, walks are short -- just 20 minutes -- but they get the blood flowing and clear away the sleep cobwebs. I really look forward to our summer evening and weekend walks where we typically walk for about an hour.
These long walks are good for Jager, but they're equally good for me. Walking is great exercise for both of us, and I'm always energized after spending an hour with my dog, enjoying the scenery and each other's company. Along the way, we encounter friendly people and dogs.
We're lucky to live in Souther California with easy access to beach trails, so we can walk along the ocean, where the salty air, waves crashing on the beach and ocean stretching out forever melt away the stress from the day. For me, walking the dog is almost like a mini vacation. It's funny to think I ever thought of it as a chore.
