Each year, I look forward to working on the annual rare-breed issue. The opportunity to learn about the rarest of breeds is a real treat for every dog lover.
I hope you have as much fun paging through this issue as I had helping produce it. Here are some of the articles you won’t want to miss:
On the Fringe: A brief history of hound breeds is followed by four fascinating profiles on some of the lesser-known members of this group of dogs: the Sloughi, Basset Bleu de Gascogne, Drever and Azawakh.
Beyond Ordinary: A behind-the-scenes look at the unique American Rare Breed Association, and profiles of four ARBA-recognized breeds: the American Hairless Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Portuguese Podengo and English Shepherd.
Rare-Breed Advocate: Nordic-dog breeder and handler Dawne Deeley works tirelessly to promote some of the world’s most uncommon breeds.
If after reading these stories you still haven’t gotten your fill of rare breeds, check out the Directory of Rare Breeds (which starts on page 68) for more than 40 rare-breed mini profiles. Hope you enjoy!
