“Max” was New York City’s top dog-name last year, newly-released figures by the city’s health department show.
The name was on 1,228 of the 101,274 dog licenses the department issued last year, according to statistics released Dec. 27. Lucky and Princess took second and third places, followed by Rocky and Buddy, leaving the top-five ranking unchanged since 2004.
In the popular breeds category, mixed breeds, with 7,374 new licenses, outnumbered any other variety in 2005, followed by Labrador Retrievers. American Pit Bull Terriers and Shih Tzus captured third and fourth place, rising from spots four and five in 2004.
German Shepherd Dogs were the fifth most popular breed of 2005, down from third place in 2004, according to health department figures.
