New York’s Luxury Condos Going to the Dogs

Several new buildings boast private dog parks and pet spas.

New York City residents have long been known as dog lovers. Now real estate developers are encouraging that attitude by outfitting several new buildings with all sorts of amenities for dogs.

Take 505 Greenwich Street, for example. The 104-unit building, which opened last year, has a pet spa, and there are plans to install a treadmill for dogs in the gym. A dog-lovers committee organizes doggie outings (its last group trip was to New England) and plans birthday parties for the building’s four-legged residents.

The William Beaver House, so named because it sits at the intersection of William and Beaver Streets in the Financial District, has plans for a top-flight dog run complete with a Japanese garden and man-made pond. The building, which is slated to open in spring 2008, has studios starting at around $800,000.

At 205 E. 59th Street, which opened this year, doggie residents get to enjoy a 1,500-square-foot dog park, complete with four small bridges for dogs to romp over, and a view of nearby Bloomingdale’s. A 1,314-square-foot two-bedroom unit goes for $1,900,000.

Maybe a city dog’s life isn’t so bad, after all.
