Dogs Rescued From Building Fire

After being rescued, several dogs and cats were treated and released.

Eighteen pets that were rescued from a fire that ravaged an apartment complex in Georgetown, Mass., last week have now all been reunited with their owners.

Firefighters, the American Red Cross, Georgetown police and animal control officers, as well as response teams from other nearby towns, were all on hand on Jan. 3 to manage an extensive rescue and evacuation operation at the site of the fire.

Muddy Creek Animal Care Center workers were also on the scene to help coordinate the veterinary emergency effort and eventually took in the various cold, wet, soot-covered, paw-singed dogs and cats, as well as one rabbit.

The most seriously injured animal was a cat named Smudge, who was in critical condition from severe hypothermia and smoke inhalation, according to the animal care center. After being stabilized at Muddy Creek, he was rushed to Essex County Veterinary Emergency Hospital for further treatment.

Smudge is said to be recovering and has been reunited with his owners.

Likewise, Muddy Creek Animal Care Center says that after fielding calls in the days since the fire, it has been able to reunite all the rescued dogs and other pets with their owners.
