Chihuahuas, Cavaliers, Dachshunds, and other little dogs finally get big photos, big pages, and a big look in “Little Dogs.” This compilation of photos and quotes is a book any dog lover will enjoy browsing.
From the silly – a Chi with her head completely wrapped up in a purple boa – to the sublime – a red-collared cutie looking out a car window onto lush countryside, the photographs take a world view of small dogs’ lives.
The pampered pooch is everywhere: wearing a feathery party collar while sitting on a bathtub caddy in a pink bathroom, entering a party down red-carpeted stairs with a formally-attired owner, getting a final touchup to the coiffure while resting on a leopard-print, black iron bed, and strolling along the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
But all kinds of dogs are included in this new title from Chronicle Books: Pomeranians, Chinese Cresteds, mixed breeds, Maltese, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Jack Russell Terriers, and others.
Quotes from famous dog lovers punctuate many of the photos, including Queen Victoria’s on her Dachshund: “She was such a beautiful and sweet creature … and so full of tricks.” A tiny Yorkshire Terrier puppy, sitting by a huge newspaper, is urged to do his doggie duty with Benjamin Franklin’s, “Energy and persistence conquer all things.” And a Maltese, sitting at the side of a fashion runway, is reminded by Yves Saint Laurent that “fashions fade, style is eternal.”
Although the photo quality is inconsistent – most are from Getty Images, the stock photography agency – the dogs in them – whether primped or pooped – are irresistible.
