Greyhounds Covered Under N.H. Anti-Cruelty Bill

Previous animal-cruelty legislation didn’t apply to dog racing tracks.

Greyhounds at New Hampshire’s three dog racetracks have gained coverage under state law. The governor’s recent approval of a bill restores racing dogs to the protection of the existing anti-cruelty statute.

Gov. John Lynch signed House Bill 1430, which also applies to racing horses. Under the measure, facilities licensed to conduct live running or harness horseracing or live dog racing are subject to criminal penalties if animal abuse takes place.

For nearly a decade, potential abusers were immune from criminal prosecution under legislation passed in 1999 that said the anti-cruelty law didn’t apply to animals at tracks. Now, individuals that abuse Greyhounds at commercial racetracks in the state can be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

“Greyhounds are like any other dogs and sometimes that’s a fact that gets lost,” said Carey Theil of GREY2K USA, a group dedicated to passing Greyhound-protection laws. The biggest factor in getting the bill approved, she said, was the tremendous support from citizens who wanted to see these dogs gain protection.

Racetrack owners opposed the bill and said it’s unnecessary since animal abuse allegations go to the pari-mutuel commission, which oversees the racetracks and has rules on the care of animals.

The act, approved in June, went into effect July 1.

It is unbelievable that Greyhounds were exempt from anti-cruelty laws. This is the most absurd thing I have heard. it just shows that racing IS in fact a cruel 'sport' when the powers that be let this take place.

I'm so glad that somebody cares enough to get the truth out about how Greyhounds are treated. I'm proud to be a part of a WONDERFUL Greyhound adoption group where I live and currently have 2 fantastic Greyhounds, or should I say that 2 WONDERFUL Greyhounds have me wrapped around their paws! There may be a few "owners" at any given trac that "MIGHT" and I mean might, be good to the hard working Greyhounds that make them money, however for the most of them are treated horribly. I've seen hounds come to us, beaten,cut,burned,mal-nut- ritioned(yes, they're "supposed" to be slim, not ANEXORIC)timid and scared. If you want a "TRUE and FAITHFUL FRIEND" then "ADOPT A GREYHOUND AND SAVE A GREYT LIFE"!!! Now on to the response of "Mr." Childs, I do take offense that you call me(because I do read every article I can on related things) "gullible". What gives you the right to "assume" peoples intelligence? By the way, you do know what you get when you break the word assume up, the first 3 letters about says it all.

Your article is ABSOLUTELY incorrect and I challenge you to print the correct information. Onwers, trainers and other NHR&G licensed personnel HAVE NEVER been immune from criminal prosecution for cruelty to animals, in fact, just the opposite, they have been held to a much higher standard than the criminal guidelines set forth in RSA 644:8, as the NHPR&G Commission can require much more stringent regulations than the standard Cruelty guidelines. We also can move about the track without the necessity of search warrants and provide appropriate law enforcement personnel with information that otherwise would be very difficult to obtain. Also individuals involved can be dealt with IMMEDIATELY by Commission as opposed to waiting for the justice system to prosecute. Duel prosecutions for cruelty offenses are often persued by both the Commission and local law enforcement. You should get your facts straight before you put something like this article out for guillible people to believe. Please feel free to contact me if you want to print the truth. Thank you for allowing me to respond.
