Broadway Barks Finds Homes for Dogs

The celebrity-hosted adoption event will take place on July 12 in New York City.

Posted: July 11, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

Since 1998, Broadway actors and actresses have come together to host Broadway Barks, a star-studded adoption event that brings together animal shelters and rescue groups to find homes for homeless cats and dogs. This year, the event celebrates its 10th anniversary on July 12, with Bernadette Peters, Mary Tyler Moore, and other celebrities urging animal lovers to adopt new pets.

Sponsored by the ASPCA and Pedigree pet food, the event will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Shubert Alley, located between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Ave. Celebrity presentations of adoptable animals will take place between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., but the animals will be available to view throughout the event.

Shelters and rescue groups participating in the event include the ASPCA, A Cause for Paws, Adopt a Boxer Rescue, Animal Haven, Anjellicle Cats Rescue, Animal Care and Control, Arf, BARC, Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi and the Strays, City Critters, the Humane Society of New York, Husky House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, NYC Siamese Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Save Kitty, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Stray from the Heart, and the Tigger Foundation. Animal control professionals will be on hand to answer questions about adoptable animals and to provide information on spaying and neutering.

Last year’s Broadway Barks event attracted more than 6,000 animal lovers who came to see and adopt the homeless pets from more than 24 animal shelters. The event also was attended by many Broadway stars from current hit shows.
