Learn to Help Dogs During Disaster

American Humane invites dog lovers to attend training session on pet disaster relief.

Posted: July 28, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

Recent floods in the Midwest have turned the spotlight on animal rescue and the need for trained professionals to help dogs, cats, and livestock left stranded or abandoned after a natural disaster. The American Humane Association, working with local animal welfare groups, has helped rescue and shelter dozens of animals affected by these events.

Now AHA invites pet lovers to receive the training necessary to help animals left helpless by natural disasters. The Basic Animal Emergency Services Training sessions will be held across the country. Topics will include animal first aid, shelter set up and response, incident command systems, and more. Tuition is $85 for American Humane members, and $100 for non-members. All training materials will be provided.

Dates and locations are as follows:

  • Kansas City, Mo.: Aug. 16-17
  • Altoona, Pa.: Aug. 16-17
  • Dayton, Ohio: Sept. 5-6
  • Pasadena, Calif.: Sept. 12-13
  • Binghamton, N.Y.: Sept. 13-14
  • Milwaukee, Wis.: Sept. 13-14
  • Anchorage, Alaska: Oct. 17-18
  • Palm City/Stuart, Fla.: Nov. 6-7

Seems like a good idea except it's rather expensive.

I wish there were pet first aid where I'm from. We don't even have any emergency pet evacuation guidelines in my community. I feel like we're way behind the times and it could be tragic someday.
