Brooke Shields’s Daughter ‘Paints’ Bulldog

Actress’s 2-year-old daughter has fun with lipstick and other makeup.

Posted: August 27, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

Brooke Shields got a surprise recently when she walked into her Manhattan apartment and was greeted at the door by her American Bulldog Darla covered head-to-paw in lipstick and other makeup.

Her 2-year-old daughter, Grier, scampered behind the dog with outstretched arms and babbled, “I paint, I paint, I paint.”

“I was, like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” the “Lipstick Jungle” actress told the London Times.

Shields admitted that the day was business as usual at her chaotic household. Daughter Rowan is 5, and husband Chris Henchy, a writer, works in Los Angeles and commutes to New York City on weekends.

“There’s not a day goes by that I feel like I’m doing everything right or perfect,” she says. “I’m on the set of ‘Lipstick,’ committed, yes, but constantly wondering how my kids are, where they are, sad when my daughter asks if she can stay up until I get home – which, of course, I say yes to now, meaning that both girls are in my bed at night, even though I said I would never allow that.”

The work vs. family struggle that Shields faces in real life is a central theme on “Lipstick Jungle,” which started its second season on NBC last week. Shields plays Wendy Healy, a New York movie executive trying to balance a career with a husband and teenage daughter.

“I really appreciate how these characters honestly reveal a very modern concept of a woman, which isn’t a concept – it’s the truth,” Shields says.

I would love to know what the bulldog was thinking while all this was going on! I also wonder who was supposed to be watching the little girl! This is destined to be one of those family stories that gets told over and over and generates good feelings for generations. I hope the dog wasn't uncomfortable during all this, especially the cleanup afterward, but I'm sure he or she is much loved and will be remembered with affection for endless patience and other wonderful qualities for a long, long time.
