Candy Spelling Hosts ‘Bark for the Cure’

A five-kilometer Los Angeles run/walk will raise money for canine cancer research.

Posted: August 28, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

Candy Spelling, the wife of late TV producer Aaron Spelling and mom to actress Tori Spelling, will help host “Bark for the Cure,” a five-kilometer run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Los Angeles to raise money for canine cancer research.

“The purpose of ‘Bark for the Cure’ is to truly make a difference and improve the knowledge around cancer and other diseases in dogs,” said Scott Morris, co-founder of event sponsor Freshpet, in a statement.

Freshpet will also make a separate donation to the L.A. Parks Foundation for each person who participates in “Bark for the Cure.” Spelling’s dog, Madison, is the event’s honorary chairdog. “The more people who bring their dogs, the more funds our parks will receive,” says Spelling, who also serves as a Los Angeles department of recreation and parks commissioner.

Registrants are asked to donate $15 per person (children under 10 are free) and $1 for dogs.

Post-event festivities include an awards ceremony for the top fundraisers, Frisbee and agility demonstrations, and food and product vendors.

“Bark for the Cure” is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m. at Griffith Park at 4730 Crystal Springs Dr., Los Angeles, Calif., 90027.

My grand-dog and I finished the race this morning and thoroughly enjoyed the cameraderie of about 1000 dog owners and their dogs. Very noisy and chaotic, but great fun! Good event

I love animal lovers - they make the world a better place and spread some cheer. What a great idea - I hope it is a tremendous success - and I hope this is an annual event. Dogs deserve all the help they can get from us humans.
