Drew Barrymore Puts Her Dog on a Diet

The star wants her Lab mix Flossie "around for as long as possible."

Posted: September 23, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

Drew Barrymore has put her Labrador Retriever-Chow Chow mix Flossie on a diet, the Boston Globe reports.

The star – who voices a pampered Chihuahua named Chloe in the upcoming film “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” – is apparently worried about her adopted dog’s health and has asked the dog’s veterinarian to prescribe a prescription diet pill.

“Flossie has gained weight over the years, and Drew is concerned about her health,” a source told the Globe. “She loves that dog and would do anything to keep her healthy - even put her on a diet. She wants to make sure Flossie is around for as long as possible.”

Several years ago, Barrymore was saved by the now 12-year-old dog when a fire struck the star’s Los Angeles home. Flossie barked after smelling smoke around 3 a.m. and “literally banged on the bedroom door,” waking her and then boyfriend comedian Tom Green, Barrymore has said.

Barrymore’s next movie, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” arrives in theaters Oct. 3.

Seems to me she should just reduce the amount of food she gives the dog daily, and increase her excercise. Excercise might not be appropriate for this dog due to her age, but why put a dog on a diet pill when you can just cut down the amount of food she eats? Makes no sense to me.

I don't know about using a pill to make a dog loose weight. I think exercise and the right amount of food is key.
