The actor waited to create his character’s voice until he met – and played with – the real Delgado.

Andy Garcia had one request when he was asked to voice Delgado, the street-wise German Shepherd Dog and former police dog who helps pampered Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore) return home in “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.”
“I asked to meet the dog, so they brought him to my house and we played like dogs,” Garcia said in a statement. “I took some pictures of him and tried to get a sense of what his temperament was and how he moved.”
Garcia says he enjoyed playing Delgado, a dignified and loyal dog who longs for his days on the police force. “You know, once a police dog, always a police dog,” Garcia says. “Delgado has a heart, he has a noble and heroic side to him and he can’t help but try to get this little Chihuahua back home.”
Producer David Hoberman approved of the process – and the actor. “The thing about Andy that’s great is his authenticity,” Hoberman says. “He’s gruff and tough and macho, but he’s got a sense of humor.”
“Beverly Hills Chihuahua” is in theaters now.
