America Picks Names for New Obama Dog

Online survey asks respondents to write in their picks for the White House’s “first dog.”

Posted: November 12, 2008, 5 a.m. EST

Yes for George, no for McCain?

Those were the results of a new MSN-Zogby poll that suggested names for President-elect Barack Obama’s White House puppy.

Other winning names included Hope, Lucky, Change, Maverick, and Sarah. Others – presumably less politically motivated – included Dog, Buddy, and Snoopy. Noteworthy but less popular suggestions included Abrahound Lincoln, Audacity, Secretary of State, Tina Fey, and Economy.

The online survey of 1,549 Americans asked respondents to write in their pick for the puppy’s name, and also asked what kind of dog the Obamas should get. One quarter of respondents said the Obamas should get a mutt, 15 percent said a Golden Retriever would be best, and 45 percent weren’t sure.

Here are the most popular names written in by poll respondents:

  1. Hope
  2. Lucky
  3. Change
  4. Sarah
  5. George
  6. Maverick
  7. Snoopy
  8. Buddy
  9. Champ
  10. Dog
  11. Freedom
  12. King
  13. Liberty
  14. Lincoln
  15. Martin
  16. Saul
  17. Yes We Can

Other, less popular suggestions:

  • Abrahound Lincoln
  • Audacity
  • Big Reg
  • Donut
  • Duffy
  • Duke
  • Economy
  • Entropy
  • Howard (Dean)
  • Lady Liberty
  • Liberty ‘Libby’
  • Momentum
  • Nomad
  • Nova or Jade
  • Oprah
  • Promise
  • Rosa
  • Rufus
  • Secretary of State
  • Tina Fey

There seemed to be a lack of relavence in the dog names suggested. I submitted a name via a white house e-mail that would have been appropriate for a water dog "SPLASH". This would have generated a laugh or at least a smile every time it was used. The name BO is too bland for an apparently active animal to be saddled with.
