‘Dancing With Dogs’ Debuts on Animal Planet

The special show introduces viewers to a different kind of dance competition.

Posted: November 27, 2008, 5 a.m. EST

First there was “Dancing with the Stars.” Now Animal Planet offers us “Dancing With Dogs.”

The new special, which airs Saturday, Dec. 6, introduces viewers to a different kind of dance competition, where four legs rule, wacky wardrobes are encouraged, and incidental bathroom breaks are common.

Based on the real-life sport of canine musical freestyle, “Dancing With Dogs” features dog-and-owner dance teams that boogie down to rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop, classical, and country in hopes of snagging the top title at the World Canine Freestyle Organization’s International Competition.

The “dancers” include Poodles, Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, and several mutts. This year’s favorites include Vera, a 7-year-old Golden Retriever and her owner, Cassandra Hartman, and Callaway, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever and her owner Laurie Sullivan.

Actor and comedian Alec Mapa, who owns dogs named Ozzy and Sweet Pea, will host the competition. “I’ve been dancing with my dogs for years,” Mapa said in a statement. “At last, it’s so exciting to know that I’m not alone. There are others out there dancing with dogs, and it’s time to go public!”

“Dancing With Dogs” premieres Saturday, Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on Animal Planet.

I just saw the show and I was very disappointed because the one example of canine freestyle I have seen was so unbelievably superior to any display I saw on the show it wasn't even in the same league. I hope the competition raises its expectations and judging criteria. If you want to see what I am comparing this against, take a took on youtube and search for "kate and gin." This is a 16-year-old girl from Britain, total amateur, who competed with canine freestyle in the British TV show "Britain's Got Talent" (the US spinoff is America's Got Talent). This girl and her border collie made the finals. This is superior canine freestyle and even the winner of tonight's show could not even come close to the quality of this performance. There are 3 of them, the audition, the 2nd, and the finals, and you'll see what I mean. I would have loved to see her and Gin compete and see how they were judged.

This special was filmed at a competition in August, so unfortunately your grandson won't be able to be in it. However, there is a teenage boy who competed and maybe your grandson can get involved like Nick is. It is a lot of fun!

My grandson dances with our border collie and with our mini aussie...how does he get on the show?
He is the only teenager that I have seen that dances.
would be a great addition to the show...
