While the economic downturn might make women pause before making purchases, it won’t affect how much they’ll spend on their beloved dogs next year.

As part of its ongoing “FemiNation” dialogue into the lifestyles and attitudes of contemporary women, Lifetime Networks announced on Dec. 1, 2008, a telephone survey of 350 female pet owners. The poll found that 89 percent of women indicate they will spend the same amount or more on their dogs and other pets in the next 12 months, while 24 percent plan on spending more money.

“This poll shows that pets are no longer viewed as mere companions, but as integral parts of their families,” said Mike Greco, executive vice president of research for Lifetime Networks. “Underlining this powerful emotional bond, 87 percent of women consider pets members of their family, with 59 percent willing to risk their lives to save their pet.”

Other findings of the survey include:

  • One-half of women ages 18 to 49 own at least one dog, and one-third own at least one cat.
  • 59 percent would risk their lives for their pet.
  • One in 10 have sacrificed a relationship for their pet.
  • More than one-in-four women put the needs of their pet ahead of their own (28 percent).
  • On average, they report having spent $160 on a gift for their pet (37 percent admit to having spent more than $100).
  • Half let their pet sleep in their bed.

A multimedia company, Lifetime advocates on behalf of a wide range of issues affecting women and their families. I LOVE my three doxie girls & would do ANYTHING for them!! I also give back by volunteering & working for the Am. Red Cross pet first aid program which helps countless animals. I believe in this program but also like the idea that I can touch so many lives. Animals are so giving & truly wonderful, how can we not do for them.
