The worst part of being a pet parent is having to terminate it's life. Knowing when to say enough is enough and show how much you love your baby by dpoing the "right"thing and ending the pain and suffering. A K-9 unit is a partnership between the animal and it's handler. Like any other law enforcement division, you would do whatever you had to to protect your partner from harm. Military Working Dogs or Police Dogs are just that, your partner. I am alive today because a "dumb dog" saved my life in Viet Nam. Her action cost her life. Sorta explains why animal abusers are on "MY HIT LIST".
