Deep Snow Causes Cancellation of 2009 Sled Dog Race
With the large amounts of snow, the trail crew has been unable to keep a designated trail open for the Third Crossing Sled Dog Rendezvous originally set Jan. 23 and 24 near Frazee, Minn. Because of this, and other snow-related reasons, the ninth annual sprint sled dog race has been cancelled, the Perham (Minn.) Enterprise Bulletin reports.

Florida Dog Finds ‘Marley & Me’ Fame
A star from the Tampa Bay area has hit the big screen. One of the Labrador Retrievers in the movie “Marley & Me” is a local. The dog, Rudy, ended up at the Hillsborough County Animal Services shelter as a stray eight years ago. When the movie producers were looking for dogs to play the title role, they e-mailed the rescue center. In all, 22 dogs were involved in the movie, with Rudy among the older canine cast members, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Britain’s Prince Edward Accused of Beating Dog
Prince Edward has been in hot water with animal rights charities after using a stick to break up a dogfight. Edward, the third son and youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II, was pictured in newspapers waving the 4-foot stick at the gundogs, Agence France-Presse reports.
