Cats and dogs are the inspiration for a contest that encourages children to dedicate a poem to their favorite furry friend. “Paws for Poetry” challenges boys and girls ages 7 through 12 to get poetic for their pets.
To participate, children may submit an original poem of any length about their pet. Along with a poem, they’re asked to provide a photo of the animal. Entries must be received by March 31.
The contest features two categories: Group One (ages 7 through 9) and Group Two (ages 10 through 12). A winner for each will be picked in time for the 13th anniversary of National Poetry Month in April.
A grand prize winner in each category will get a prize package worth $50. Two runners-up in each category will get a $25 gift package.
Children's author and poet Darren Sardelli is the contest judge. Prizes are provided by online pet supply provider Drs. Foster and Smith.
The contest is co-sponsored by kids’ virtual field trip website Meet Me At the Corner and Laugh a Lot Poetry.
The winning poem and pet photo will be highlighted in a Meet Me At the Corner video podcast.
