Hotel Chain Drops Pet Fees, Dog Weight Limits

Boutique Joie de Vivre hotels now welcome dogs of all sizes with no pet fee.

Posted: July 2, 2009, 5 a.m. EDT

Joie de Vivre, a collection of boutique hotels throughout California, has eliminated canine weight limits and pet fees at its 15 pet-friendly properties in the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley and Southern California.

“In the past eight months, we’ve nearly doubled the number of dog-friendly hotels in the collection,” said Chip Conley, founder and chief executive officer of Joie de Vivre. “We wanted to make our pet-friendly hotels even more hospitable to dogs, so we scrapped weight restrictions and standard pet surcharges so that more of our guests can enjoy traveling with their pets.”

The company is quick to point out, however, that fees are dropped provided there is no damage to the room and the guest follows the hotel’s pet policies.

The Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach, Calif., will join the pet-friendly pack when it becomes a Joie de Vivre hotel this fall.

In addition, the hotels offer special pet amenities, including in-room dog beds, dog food, water bowls, toys and a doggie turndown service. Each hotel offers different amenities and some offer fee-based grooming or dog walking upon request.

I agree, good job/good news! Many times larger dogs are quieter and well behaved then the smaller ones. I never understood size rules.

This is really nice. I hope other hotels will follow suit.

We'd love to see more hotels by the beach do this. Our doggy has never been to the beach and we'd love to take her.
