One day in May, Marc Hernandez took his pit bull Tyson to an East Harlem animal shelter, where he reluctantly and tearfully surrendered him. The problem was not Tyson’s behavior, but his home: Mr. Hernandez lives in one of New York City’s public housing projects, where a ban on pit bulls and other large dogs went into effect May 1, The New York Times reports.

Surgeons Remove 21-Pound Tumor From Dog
Surgeons at Boston's Angell Animal Medical Center removed a 21-pound tumor from a Labrador Retriever, the largest tumor veterinarians there had ever seen. Warren, 13, fully recovered from the surgery to remove the tumor that had grown to one-sixth his body weight, reports.

Dogfighting Ring at Daycare Shut Down
Authorities have shut down the suburban Chicago home daycare where prosecutors contend a dogfighting ring was being run. Illinois Department of Children and Family Services spokesman Kendall Marlowe says the Maywood daycare is under investigation, the Chicago Tribune reports.
